June 30th deadline passes, MNR to make decision within 30 days

July 2, 2008

In early June 2008, Superior Aggregates Company (SAC), through its agent DST Consulting Engineers, mailed out letters to individuals and groups who had submitted objections to the company's aggregate licence application on Michipicoten Bay, asking recipients to respond by June 30, 2008, in its final attempts to resolve the objections. Objectors were asked to respond to SAC/DST and MNR by the deadline with recommendations how their objections could be resolved.

The June 30 deadline has now passed.

The licence application, along with the letters of outstanding objections, are expected to be delivered by SAC to the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) within the next few weeks.  Upon delivery of thie package from SAC, according to the licencing process, MNR must decide within 30 days if it will approve the licence application, refuse the licence application, or refer the application to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) for a decision. It is expected that MNR will likely refer the application to the OMB. If so, the OMB will hold a hearing in Wawa, Ontario, to hear the licence application along with other appeals that have been made to SAC's application to amend the Municipality of Wawa's Official Plan and to rezone part of its property. Timing of the anticipated OMB hearing is unknown at this time.
