March 22, 2010Members of Citizens Concerned for Michipicoten Bay have been actively participating in the Municipality of Wawa's Official Plan Review over the past feew months. The Municipality's Official Plan has not been updated since 1985.
Below are CCMB's comments on the July 2009 draft version of the Official Plan
21 October 2009Mayor & CouncilMunicipality of Wawa40 Broadway Ave.P.O. Box 500Wawa, OntarioPOS 1K0Dear Mayor & Council:RE: Proposed Official PlanCitizens Concerned for Michipicoten Bay is a non-profit corporation that encourages the protection of clean water, natural ecosystems, biological diversity, other natural values, and the cultural heritage of Michipicoten Bay, eastern Lake Superior, and the surrounding shoreline. We welcome this opportunity to comment on the Proposed Official Plan for the Municipality of Wawa, the first such plan to be developed by the new Municipal organization. On the Municipality’s official website, Council has provided excellent promotion of the extensive opportunities for recreational activities available to tourists because of our proximity to Lake Superior. The website encourages them to engage in hiking, paddling and enjoying the many beaches that Lake Superior provides to visitors to this municipality.Consequently, it would seem appropriate that the Municipality's Official Plan should reflect what the website promotes. That is, that our location on Lake Superior offers many benefits and amenities, which have contributed to the rich history, growth, and allure of the Wawa area. Protection of our natural heritage, which includes the Lake Superior shoreline, should be a high priority. CCMB would suggest that the Vision Statement in the Official Plan acknowledge the importance of protecting the area's natural heritage features and that policies adopted under the Plan consider the protection of this rich resource.CCMB supports the submission made by Mr. Joel Cooper and agrees that the Lake Superior shoreline should be included as a major category of land use in the Official Plan for the Municipality of Wawa. This zone should recognize the unique ecological, cultural, aesthetic and scenic features that define the Lake Superior shoreline landscape. Attached is a copy of Mr. Cooper's submission for your reference.
We look forward to continuing to participate in the development of the Official Plan and appreciate this opportunity to provide you with our comments.Yours truly,Mark Z. LeschishinPresident
